Reporting From Exile: Episode 1
Five days ago we packed up our stuff into a van, said goodbye (temporarily) to Portland and headed down to Reno, Nevada to begin what is planned as an approximate two-year exile from the Rose City.
We've gone from 30 feet above sea level (according to internet search) to approximately 5000 feet. From the Pacific Northwest rain forest to the high Sierra's. If Portland is the hippy cousin of Grizzly Adams, Reno is the unholy combination of a Tom Waits song and Ansel Adams photograph.
Some random observations...
- Mirror Pond is cheaper here than in Portland. Am I the only one who finds this strange?
- I forgot how much I loved lightening storms.
- The lack of humidity is weird. Being an Oregonian you get used to the webbed feet jokes, being an Oregonian in the high desert you're constantly reaching for the lotion. (After applying putting in the basket.)
There is a double rainbow outside right now, half the complex is outside looking at it. That's kind of cool. You know what we used to call a rainbow in Portland? Tuesday. (Any day of the week really.)
It's hot here. The lack of humidity creates more burn, although I will take this over walking out into the sauna of a Portland summer any day. Still, I could do without the sunburn on my noggin.
It is indeed green here, just not green enough. I miss my ferns, moss and ivy.
That's all for now. As Casey Kasem would say, keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.
