The New Fascists: Star Wars Fans
Scott Holleran has an interesting editorial up on Box Office Mojo in which he questions the patriotism-to the point of crying fascism-of the legions of Star Wars fans who have their panties in a wad over the changes to the original trilogy. Sound a little extreme? Maybe. In reality the fans lean more towards self-righteous dorkism than fascism, but the gist of his editorial remains correct.
Check out some of the comments by "fans."
"Each and every one of us thirtysomethings that spent our allowance on multiple showings of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi are now the true owners of this work of art."
"Star Wars does not belong to [George Lucas]. Any movie that is that huge a phenomenon ceases being the vision of one man. Star Wars belongs to everybody."
Jesus people, get over your bad selves. One has to wonder if these people are that whiney in all aspects of their lives, if so there is a large amount of single nerds out there in desperate need of an emotional diaper change. I too am one of the afore mentioned thirty-somethings who spent gobs and gobs of cash on the movies and related merchandise in my youth, a practice that continues to this day. However I realize something that I'm betting Doug & Wendy Whiner don't...
It's a movie.
Despite the phenomenon, despite your warm and fuzzy memories of childhood, they're just movies. The alteration/addition of ten minutes of so of footage do not change that. Get over it already. I question the sincerity of these "fans." The American Heritage Dictionary defines a fan as: An ardent devotee; an enthusiast. The same dictionary describes a whiner as one who complains or protests in a childish fashion. I'll let you decide for yourselves which definition is more applicable.
May the farce be with you.
